Initially the windlass motor failed, the first time we needed to raise the anchor after the first night.
It took several days for Cosmos to arrange a replacement and send an engineer to repair it.
replaced windlass motor showing old and new in its box
The repair being completed, we were asked to pay for the repair in cash as the “owner had no facility with the engineer”
Subsequently, the windlass failed to hold the chain which became a problem as the wind increased, require a chain that would hold the nachor.
After 11 days the windlass was replaced with a new windlass
The old windlass showed serious rust and wear
Furthermore, when the replacement windlass drum was fitted (see below with new windlass) the engineer said that we were adding a 6mm chain to an 8mm windlass. So it would probably slip. The following pictures show the ill fitting chain on the new windlass. ……And slip it did, whenever strain was put on the enchor.
Below are examples of correctly installed matching chains and windlasses (NOT THE LEARTIS)

Hi Gilbert,
I’m sorry to hear you are having to resort legally to resolve this problem.
Having looked at you photographs it is quite obvious the chain is not the required size for the gypsy. I have just spoken with my engineer and he has confirmed most charter boats should have a 10 mm Gypsy with a corresponding chain. If your chain was only 6mm then obviously you would have a problem anchoring and raising the anchor.
I hope this is some help.
Best wishes,
